Yet curiously enough he is one of the writers I admire with least reserve, and <em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/em>, in particular, is a book which it seems impossible for me to grow tired of\u2026 If I had to make a list of six books which were to be preserved when all others were destroyed, I would certainly put <em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/em> among them.\u201d <sup>1<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On this, the occasion of Jonathan Swift\u2019s 350th birthday, we share Orwell\u2019s enthusiasm for Swift and his work by adding our own library-style tribute: Swift is the most popular Irish-born author, and <em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/em> the most popular work by an Irish author, in library collections today.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Studying the \u201cIrish presence\u201d worldwide<\/h2>\n<p>Over the summer we published several short pieces describing findings from a study of the Irish presence in the published record\u2014the collection of materials by Irish people, about Ireland, or published in Ireland. A study of this kind is made possible by the massive aggregation of bibliographic and holdings data in OCLC\u2019s WorldCat, a database of library catalogs. We had the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/what-is-the-most-popular-irish-book-1.3136544\">report some of our findings<\/a> in the <em>Irish Times<\/em>, where Lorcan Dempsey noted that exploration of the Irish presence \u201cis a form of \u2018reading at scale,\u2019 identifying patterns in how countries project their cultural, intellectual, literary, and musical traditions through the published record.\u201d<\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.oclc.org%2Fnext%2Fhappy-350th-birthday-jonathan-swift%2F&#038;text=Happy%20350th%20birthday%2C%20Jonathan%20Swift%20%E2%80%93%20the%20most%20popular%20Irish%20author%20in%20the%20world%21&#038;related' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Happy 350th birthday, Jonathan Swift \u2013 the most popular Irish author in the world! <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.oclc.org%2Fnext%2Fhappy-350th-birthday-jonathan-swift%2F&#038;text=Happy%20350th%20birthday%2C%20Jonathan%20Swift%20%E2%80%93%20the%20most%20popular%20Irish%20author%20in%20the%20world%21&#038;related' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p>Using a measure of popularity based on the number of appearances by an author or work in library collections worldwide, we determined that Jonathan Swift and <em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/em> top the lists of most popular Irish authors and most popular works by an Irish author, respectively. Following Swift in the ranking are Oscar Wilde, Eve Bunting, George Bernard Shaw, and Oliver Goldsmith, while <em>Dracula, The Vicar of Wakefield, The Picture of Dorian Gray<\/em>, and <em>Artemis Fowl<\/em> round out the top five most popular works by an Irish author.<\/p>\n<h2>Cooperative library data: a unique, powerful way to explore world literature<\/h2>\n<p>Library collections are where the world\u2019s literature is gathered and stewarded. Library <em>data<\/em>\u2014the information libraries have recorded about their collections\u2014is a unique and powerful resource for exploring the contours of world literature.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Irish study (full report forthcoming), OCLC Research has produced similar surveys of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oclc.org\/research\/publications\/library\/2013\/2013-07r.html\">Scottish<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oclc.org\/research\/publications\/library\/2014\/oclcresearch-new-zealand-presence-2014-overview.html\">New Zealand<\/a> national presences in the published record. Taken together, this work helps demonstrate the value of library data\u2014and more specifically, WorldCat as an aggregator and repository of that data\u2014as a source of information about the world\u2019s literature.<\/p>\n<p>So we add our accolades to the many honoring Jonathan Swift today, and close with this typically satirical passage from the man himself:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I write for the noblest end, to inform and instruct mankind, over whom I may, without breach of modesty, pretend to some superiority, from the advantages I received by conversing so long among the accomplished <em>Houyhnhnms<\/em>. I write without any view towards profit or praise. I never suffer a word to pass that may look like reflection, or possibly give the least offense even to those who are most ready to take it. So that I hope I may with justice pronounce myself an author perfectly blameless, against whom the tribes of answerers, considerers, observers, reflecters, detecters, remarkers, will never be able to find matter for exercising their talents.
