In celebration of National Library Week, a few members of the OCLC team reflect on their career choices and today\u2019s libraries in a five-part <em>Next<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>WEDNESDAY, 13 APRIL 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><strong>If you could give your younger self advice for your first library job, what would it be?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlw-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Daniel-Boivin-150x150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-332 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Daniel-Boivin-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u201cTake as many diverse courses as possible but focus mostly on management. Technology is important but management and project management are probably as if not more important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Boivin, Executive Director, OCLC Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nlw-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dooley-jackie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dooley-jackie.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie Dooley\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Get as much real-world work experience as you can before you get your graduate degree, and, if possible, in a variety of environments. I had four different jobs while at UCLA\u2014each and every one of them valuable in its own way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jackie Dooley, Program Officer<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nlw-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rob-Favini-150x150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-340 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rob-Favini-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Be more patient with difficult patrons\u2014you have no idea what their day was like before they came in, or even what kind of a frustrating day they were having using the library. Also, be kinder to the displaced people who had few places to go other than the library. You don&#8217;t know their back story, so cut them some (a lot of) slack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Favini, MSLIS, Member Relations Liaison<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nlw-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Ron-Gardner-150x150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Ron-Gardner-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Be a GOOD listener. Ask questions about what others in the library do\u2014and how their jobs may (or may not) relate to your own job. Find a mentor (not necessarily assigned to you if the library does) and talk to those with experience. Everything was better when it was localized. As a general principle, I continue to espouse this. However my work with OCLC has also taught me the value of adhering to certain across-the-board standards because it makes collaboration outside of your immediate ambit way more doable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daphne Kouretas, Senior Implementation and Effective Use Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nlw-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Kem-Lang-150x150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Kem-Lang-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8220;I had wonderful work opportunities and experiences. I treated all of these jobs as professional endeavors\u2014you never knew who might be watching you and your work efforts. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for new learning and additional tasks. Don\u2019t settle for the job you\u2019ve been given and tell yourself that it\u2019s \u2018just a job\u2019 and turn your brain off while you do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kemberly A.M. I spent a good number of years in para-professional positions in libraries after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhrenreplica.to\/\">replica uhren<\/a> receiving my BA while also pursuing my musical interests and activities. Merrilee is an active member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries (RBMS-ACRL). She has authored or co-authored articles, guidelines, and reports for a variety organizations and professional journals. She is frequently an invited speaker at international professional conferences and workshops on topics relating to digital libraries and special collections. In 2014, Merrilee was elected as a Fellow of SAA, the highest honor bestowed on individuals by SAA and awarded for outstanding contributions to the archival profession. She is passionate about forging connections between Wikimedia projects and cultural heritage institutions. She is the editor ofLeveraging Wikipedia: Connecting Communities of Knowledge (ALA Editions, 2018).
