The timing was fortuitous, as there was (and is) a great appetite for understanding the evolving open content landscape and what it means for libraries. At OCLC, we were forging ahead with research, product development, MARC proposals, publisher agreements, and more. All with the goal of enhancing the visibility and accessibility of open content for library users. You can learn more about responses to the Open Content Survey in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/content\/dam\/oclc\/services\/brochures\/216262-WWAE_Open-Content-survey-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this results summary<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/research\/events\/2019\/092519-the-shift-to-open-at-university-and-research-libraries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watch a recording<\/a> of our \u201cWorks in Progress\u201d webinar, \u201cThe Shift to Open at University and Research Libraries Worldwide.\u201d In this webinar, my colleague Titia van der Werf (Senior Program Officer, OCLC Research) shares more results from the study.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Access Week 2019<\/a>, and over the last year we\u2019ve made some excellent progress.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Through the cooperative, we\u2019ve added more than 100 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/content\/dam\/oclc\/knowledge-base\/openaccessknowledgebase.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open collections to the WorldCat knowledge base<\/a> (a 31.5% increase), bringing the total number to 421. We\u2019ve partnered with new open content providers, such as the Open Textbook Network and digital cultural heritage experts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/en\/news\/releases\/2019\/20191021-oclc-and-europeana-partnership.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europeana<\/a>, to add metadata to WorldCat for tens of millions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/content\/dam\/oclc\/worldcat-discovery\/openaccesscentralindex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open resources, discoverable through our open access filter<\/a> in WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat.org. And perhaps, most importantly, we\u2019ve engaged in countless conversations with library workers, scholars, students, partners, and other learners who share our vision and enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.oclc.org%2Fnext%2Fopen-content-where-we-are-and-where-were-going%2F&#038;text=Open%20content%3A%20where%20we%20are%20and%20where%20we%E2%80%99re%20going%20%23OCLCnext&#038;related' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open content: where we are and where we\u2019re going #OCLCnext <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.oclc.org%2Fnext%2Fopen-content-where-we-are-and-where-were-going%2F&#038;text=Open%20content%3A%20where%20we%20are%20and%20where%20we%E2%80%99re%20going%20%23OCLCnext&#038;related' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p>Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to present an \u201cOpen Content Update\u201d at the Americas Regional Council 2019 Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, alongside my OCLC colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/author\/chip-nilges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chip Nilges<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oclc.org\/next\/author\/cathy-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cathy King<\/a>. With so much going on across the organization, we wanted to take a moment to provide a quick overview on our progress and strategy as it relates to open content. While we\u2019ve come a long way, we know that we have further to go, and remain committed to supporting all of you along your open content journey.<\/p>\n<p>I invite you to view a video of our ARC19 presentation, below.
